Chapter 83
Chapter 83
Angered by Derek's ruthlessness, Rose decided not to delude herself. She asked, "Why are you breaking off the engagement? I'm the mother of your kids. Shouldn't you marry me?"
Derek's face was terrifyingly gloomy. "Stop playing dumb. If you cooperate, I'll only tell the public that we break off our engagement and that you are not my kids' biological mother. But if you keep pestering me, the Hopkinson Group'll lose more than several projects. What you and Laura have done will also be dug up."
Rose paled at his words.
"No way," she murmured, refusing to believe that Derek had founded out the truth.
Derek checked the time and thought, 'Emily should've already arrived at the Scott's by now. Yet I still needa deal with this damn woman who kept me and Emily apart.'
"Think about what you're gonna do. I don't wanna hear anyone gossiping about our relationship ever again. Get it?"
Derek wasn't letting Rose off. He just thought it'd be better for Emily to revenge herself.
In this way, she'd get a sense of achievement and give vent to her wrath.
He didn't care if someone sided with Rose. After all, he had only promised that he wouldn't make what Rose had done public. He didn't say he wouldn't go after her.
As a CEO, he valued commitment.
Rose was the one who separated him from Emily and his kids for so long. Therefore, he would make sure that Rose got punished.
Derek leaned forward, feeling unbearable to stick around any longer.
"Fine, deal. Please don't make those things public."
Rose agreed in panic. She could tell from Derek's eyes that he already knew about Emily's relationship with the kids.
She got to be Derek's fiancée because of Emily's kids. At the end of the day, she still had to return everything she had stolen from Emily.
"Emily..." Rose said with caution. Meanwhile, she thought, 'So everything I've done ended up paving the way for Emily?'
"It's none of your business. I won't let you hurt her or the kids again."
Derek warned fiercely, his eyes wary.
Rose felt bitter. Derek was the most perfect man she'd ever seen. He was tall and handsome, and he was already the head of a large family at a young age. She thought, 'It's a shame that I didn't stop Emily from running into him in the first place. Otherwise, I would've killed her long ago.
Regretting it won't make a difference now, though. The plan that Laura and I had been working on all these years has failed, and the Hopkinson Group is our only hope. But now it seems, with Derek's support, the company will soon be ruined, too.'
Rose left desolately. The hotel witnessed her finest hour as well as her downfall.
Derek couldn't care less about Rose's feelings. Eric knew how eager Derek was to go home.
So he drove over as soon as Derek walked out of the hotel.
"Speed up," Derek urged.
While on the road, Derek hurried Eric. But as they approached the villa, Derek began to hesitate.
Seeing Derek's expression through the rearview mirror, Eric was stunned.
Yet as a professional assistant, he wouldn't show his inner feelings on his face.
After parking the car, he quickly got out and opened the door for Derek.
Just when Derek walked to the door, Ian ran to him, knocking him half a step backward.
"What's wrong?"
Ian looked up at Derek with eyes full of joy.
Derek couldn't tell if Emily had told Ian the truth or not. He looked up at Emily as she came toward him from the living room.
Walking beside her were the other three kids.
In an instant, he understood what family was like.
"Daddy! Aaron and I have a Mommy now! I'm so happy! We like Emily so much! Turns out our mommy isn't Rose!"
Ian jumped for joy.
Emily nodded as she looked into Derek's eyes.
When she found out about it today, it took her quite a while to recover from the shock. To her surprise, the children accepted it so easily.
However, things didn't go as smoothly as Derek had pictured. Diane seemed fine, yet Chris looked sullen.
He looked even more like Derek now.
After glaring at Derek, Chris shook off Emily's hand. Then he ran upstairs and locked himself in Aaron's room.
"Chris!" Surprised, Emily instinctively wanted to run after Chris.
"Wait." Derek stopped her. "He has a mind of his own. So let me talk to him. Take care of them three for me."
Ian and Diane seemed panicked, and Aaron frowned. Emily nodded and agreed to let Derek have a go.
Derek opened the door to Aaron's room, and it was pitch dark. By the light in the hallway, he saw Chris sitting on the floor. He walked over and sat down next to Chris, remaining a short distance in between.
Chris became alert, like a puppy whose territory had been invaded.
Derek ignored it and sat with him for a while. Chris gradually let his guard down.
Derek began to talk about the first time he met Aaron and Ian. Then he mentioned his feelings for Emily and his love for Chris and Diane.
Chris moved a bit. Derek pretended not to notice and went on talking.
"I'm not trying to defend myself. I know that I'm not a good father. But I don't have feelings for Rose. And she's no longer my fiancée now. If you're willing to give me a chance, I'd love to be your real father. I'm not gonna force you. I'll wait until you accept me. OK?"
Derek had never spoken so gently and patiently before. Chris had been the only man in the house before Derek showed up. And he wanted to protect Emily and Diane, even though he was only a kid.
Derek knew that it would be hard for Chris to accept him all of a sudden, but he was willing to put in the time and effort to prove himself.
After a while, Chris still didn't say anything. Derek wasn't disappointed, though, as he was more patient than Chris.
When he stood up to give Chris some space, Chris spoke up.
"Actually, I suspected it a long time ago. I even got your hair and wanted to take a paternity test."
Derek arched his brow in surprise.
"But I threw it away in the end, cuz you and Rose had two kids who are about my age. You hurt Emily, so I want nothing to do with you."
Derek boggled. Chris was so smart. Though he was just a kid, he had so many secrets. Derek felt proud and heartbroken at the same time.
"But Aaron and Ian are both Mommy's kids. Sorry that I misunderstood you."
Derek raised his hand to hide his smile, thinking, 'It's so cute that he talks like an adult.'
"Apology accepted."
He tried his best not to laugh, fearing that Chris'd kick him out in a fit of pique.
"But Diane and I are taking Mommy's surname. We're not gonna change it, "Chris said solemnly.
Downstairs, Emily was surprised to see Chris and Derek coming down together.
"Mommy!" Chris threw himself into her arms.
Emily bent down and held him.
"Sorry, Chris. I told you without considering your feelings." Emily felt guilty.
"Mommy, I'll give Derek a chance, but it depends on how he behaves," Chris said sensibly.
Emily looked at Derek in shock, and he shrugged with a smug.
Aaron and Ian looked at Chris with expectant eyes. Chris left Emily's arms and took their hands.
"And me."
The bright Diane joined in, and the four kids all laughed. A lively atmosphere filled the house.
