Chapter 38
Chapter 38
Emily felt that time was practically flying. No sooner had she settled Andrew in and got him into the job than it was time for Nick's birthday party.
She quickly changed into her gown and made it out of the house after promising to buy Chris and Diane dessert.
By the time she drove to the Field's, the place was already bustling.
Regardless of why Nick had given her the invitation, today was a fantastic opportunity for her. Everyone invited was from the upper class, and maybe she could find a solution to the branch's problems.
It had been a long time since Emily had shown up at a party among the celebrities, and her appearance immediately attracted attention.
She had charming facial features and noble temperament, and she was wearing a simple but not ordinary gown. She was the center of attention wherever she went.
Men's gazes followed her, and women were nothing but jealous of her.
"She is not dead after all. However, she was pregnant out of wedlock, and no one knew who the father was. How humiliating was that?"
"I heard that she made a big fuss at Rose's engagement party this time."
"You think that was all? She came back to fight over the family fortune, and she even tore up the will on the spot!"
"How shameless! If I were her, I would never come back."
The malicious words of those women could not hurt Emily whatsoever. She walked into the hall calmly, listening to the conversations of the business bigwigs while looking for new opportunities.
Suddenly, someone patted Emily on the shoulder. She turned around vigilantly.
"Louise? Why are you here?" Emily asked in surprise.
Although attendees all came from noble families, each family had its own social circle. Therefore, people from different families may know each other by name, but they might not necessarily be in contact. Neither Emily nor Louise would hang out with a playboy like Nick. They could hardly be called acquaintances.
For a banquet like this, invitations would be sent to all families in advance, yet it was nothing but a sign of courtesy. Usually, those from the noble families would send gifts over, but they seldom showed up in person, which was the reason why Emily was so surprised to see Louise.
"I put the invitation in the drawer after I received it. Then I heard that you would be here as well. It took me forever to find it," Louise complained. "Besides, what if you got bullied if I didn't show up? Nick is a playboy who enjoys flirting with beautiful women."
"Emily."
Emily was chatting with Louise when she suddenly heard someone calling her from behind.
She turned around and was pushed into a corner before she could see who it was. Then several girls gathered around her, making her unable to get out.
After that, two girls stepped aside to make way for a tall girl with reddish brown hair.
"Jenny," Emily said. "Your means are still so straightforward."
"You're still so annoying." Jenny hated Emily. They had known each other since they were young, and the mutual hatred they held lasted just as long.
They didn't make a lot of noise, so few people noticed what was going on around this corner.
Jenny flicked her hair and raised her head, practically looking at Emily with her nostrils.
"Who gave you the invitation?" Jenny suddenly asked.
Emily felt ridiculous. She thought, 'Seriously? Is this why you asked them to circle me? Just to ask me such a dumb question?'
Perhaps Emily's expression gave herself away too easily. Jenny suddenly became angry and said, "You don't deserve to be on an occasion like this."
Jenny had a crush on Nick for a long time. These years, she had come to the Field's a lot using her family as an excuse just to get to spend more time with Nick. Recently, she heard that the two families were planning on connecting by marriage. Such a piece of news made her secretly rejoice for days. For the same reason, she had known the guests that were invited long ago. She checked the list several times, and she was pretty sure she didn't see Emily's name.
Also, few people had extra invitations. It was impossible for Emily to get an invitation from anyone but Nick.
Nick was a playboy who was involved with countless women, and this irritated Jenny a lot. She had lost count of how many women she had clashed with because of Nick.
"Long time no see. You are very beautiful today." Emily raised her glass to Jenny, which was a sign of refusal and warning.
"Yes, because my male companion is very handsome." Jenny glared at Emily.
Only then did Emily realize why Jenny would ask that question. Well, Emily had no interest in being a part of such a dubious love affair. She had a lot on her plate, and her time was precious.
Besides, since Jenny cared so much about who gave her the invitation, Emily figured the guy Jenny was so desperate about. She lowered her head to hide her smile. She was surprised that Jenny would fall for Nick, the playboy.
Jenny whispered something to a girl, and the girl walked out. Soon, she returned with two glasses of wine in her hands.
Jenny picked up one glass and handed the other one to Emily. "Long time no see. This one is on me."
Emily took the wine, yet she didn't drink it, since she smelled something familiar. She looked up at Jenny. Jenny raised her glass as Emily had done before and motioned Emily to drink.
"I didn't expect that after so long, you still remember what I'm allergic to." Emily looked into Jenny's eyes, turning serious.
Jenny shook the wine in her hand. "That bitch Rose told me you went to the branch office. If memory serves correctly, it's a children's toy company, right?"
She looked at Emily triumphantly. Jenny's family owned the largest toy factory in the city. If Emily wanted to stay in the branch office, Emily couldn't afford to fall out with Jenny. In other words, Emily had to drink the wine.
Emily put down her glass. To her surprise, Jenny used the branch office to threaten her for Nick's sake.
"Move!" At the same time, Louise pushed the girls away and approached Emily. She picked up the glass, sniffed it, and then asked Emily, "You didn't drink it, did you?"
Emily shook her head, then Louise was relieved.
In the next second, Louise raised the glass and was about to drink up. She wasn't afraid of Jenny. However, she knew Emily's painstaking efforts for the sake of the branch office, and she didn't want Emily's efforts to go to waste. She figured that Jenny didn't specify Emily to drink anyway. Emily was allergic to what was added to the wine, yet she wasn't.
"No." Emily suddenly grabbed Louise's hand. Before Louise could react, she took the glass and poured the wine on the ground. "It's mixed with something else.
"Jenny, I've seen you pull this trick many times already. You better know what you're doing," Emily then turned to warn Jenny.
Looking at Emily's serious expression, Louise realized there was something wrong with the wine. She glared at Jenny.
Jenny looked away guiltily. "Suit yourself. Let's go."
Soon, Jenny and her girlfriends left.
"Louise, don't be so impulsive next time." Emily looked at Louise worried. "Jenny is getting crazy. She even dares to use such forbidden drugs at a party like this."
"You should be very careful. She doesn't dare to hurt me. But she is after you. I'm worried that she won't stop trying to harm you," Louise reminded Emily. "But why? I don't get it. It's the first time you met her after you came back."
"Did you hear which family the Evans want to unite by marriage?" Emily didn't answer Louise's question directly.
"Well, I think I've heard the Fields are thinking of the same thing, but they haven't landed on a family yet..." Louise tried to remember, and then she looked at Emily in surprise.
Emily looked at Louise and nodded with certainty.
"No way! Nick Field?" Louise said in shock. She knew that the invitation in Emily's hand had come from Nick himself.
