Chapter 13

　　Emily was glad that her four years of poor life had made her accustomed to carrying cash with her. Otherwise, she wouldn't even have the money to take a taxi.

　　Because she was drenched, she had to pay the driver an extra fee for cleaning the car.

　　When Emily reached the door, it opened from the inside.

　　"Mommy," Diane called out happily. She had been lying by the window waiting for Emily to return, so when she saw Emily, Diane ran down like a happy puppy.

　　Chris, who had heard the sound, also came out of the room. He found that Emily was soaked, and she smelled like she had been in a river.

　　He frowned. His mother left early with an anxious look. Who did she meet? How did she fall into the river?

　　Chris did not ask his mother. If she did not want to say anything now, he would pretend not to notice it.

　　"Mommy, you're wet. You should take a hot shower and drink some hot milk." Chris was very good at taking care of Emily and Diane.

　　"Mommy, why are you wet..." Chris cut in and shook his head at Diane.

　　Diane bit her lower lip and stopped asking. Although she didn't understand why she couldn't ask, she knew that it was not the right time.

　　Chris and Diane were both so considerate, which made her heart ache.

　　She caressed Chris and Diane's heads and said gently, "Can I tell you this in the future? I promise."

　　"Okay, I believe Mommy." Diane nodded.

　　"I also believe in Mommy," Chris said hurriedly.

　　Emily, Chris, and Diane were living in a rented house. It wasn't convenient for them to stay in a hotel, so Louise helped them to rent this place.

　　This house had two floors. Although it wasn't very big, it was enough for them. The house was decorated nicely. Chris and Diane liked it very much.

　　When Emily went to take a shower, Chris and Diane returned to the children's room and closed the door.

　　Chris whispered, "Mommy fell into the river. I can smell it."

　　Diane's eyes widened in fear. "Who pushed Mommy into a river?"

　　"I don't know." Chris pursed his lips. He was still young and wished to grow up soon. This way, he could protect his mother and Diane.

　　Diane's expression turned sullen.

　　"Diane, we can check on her phone. Then, we'll know who she met with," Chris said.

　　"Really? Chris, you're so smart." Diane was happy.

　　"Of course. I'm a great hacker," Chris promised.

　　"Okay, Mommy is taking a shower now. Wait for me here." Diane saw this as a fun game, her voice getting smaller.

　　Chris poked his head out of the door and saw Diane running over in the corridor.

　　"I got it." Diane was so excited that her face turned red. She felt that she had accomplished a big mission.

　　"Great." Chris praised Diane.

　　Emily's phone fell into the water, so they couldn't turn it on. Chris quickly fixed it, and then he turned on the phone.

　　Diane looked nervously at Chris' laptop, even though she couldn't understand it.

　　Chris' fingers danced on the keyboard.

　　A few minutes later, Chris screened the results. He got the messages and phone calls Emily had received from yesterday to this morning.

　　"That's all. We don't know the contents of the phone calls. Let me look at the text messages first." Chris pondered.

　　"I want to have a look too." Diane leaned forward and stared at the screen.

　　Soon, they found their target.

　　"Someone asked Mommy to go to the cemetery early today. The person said that it would tell Mommy what she wanted to know the most," said Diane.

　　"This is an unfamiliar number. Mommy made no remarks about it." Chris continued typing.

　　"What are you doing?" Diane asked Chris.

　　"I'm looking for the owner of this number," Chris explained.

　　Then Chris said, "Done."

　　Diane put the phone back in Emily's room.

　　Chris searched quickly and saved a lot of time. When Emily finished her shower, Diane had already returned to the children's room.

　　Chris quickly put away his laptop.

　　When Emily knocked on the door and entered, Chris was playing number puzzles with Diane.

　　"Chris, Diane, how about some cookies for dessert?" Emily's voice was a little hoarse.

　　"OK, Mommy," Chris and Diane answered together. They were a little nervous, so they didn't notice that Emily's voice was a little unusual.

　　When Diane heard Emily close the door and leave, Diane immediately asked Chris, "What are we going to do, Chris?"

　　Chris shook his head and pointed at the door.

　　At that moment, Emily opened the door. Chris and Diane looked at her.

　　"You guys are quiet today. What happened? Are you hiding something from me?" Emily asked, embarrassed.

　　"Mommy, we are just kids. What can we hide from you?" Diane asked with a puzzled look.

　　After Emily left, Chris and Diane made sure that Emily had gone to make cookies. They clapped happily.

　　In the afternoon, Emily, Chris, and Diane baked cookies together. Chris liked the shape of a little rabbit, while Diane liked the shape of a little bear. They baked a lot of cookies.

　　Diane put the cookies into many pretty boxes.

　　"Mommy, I want to give some cookies to Louise. Is that okay?" Diane asked.

　　Emily did not answer her.

　　"Mommy?" Diane was a little worried.

　　Chris ran to the living room and found Emily lying on the sofa.

　　"Mommy, what's wrong?" Chris pushed Emily.

　　"What's going on with Mommy? Chris, I'm so scared," Diane said, crying.

　　"Don't be afraid, Diane. We need help. We can look for Louise," Chris comforted Diane.

　　Diane held Emily's hand as Chris made the call.

　　Louise arrived quickly and brought the doctor from the Norris family.

　　"Chris, Diane, are you alright? This is Dr. Smith. Let him check on Emily first," said Louise anxiously.

　　Louise hugged Chris and Diane as they sobbed.

　　"Emily has a fever. It's not serious. Her temperature isn't high," Dr. Smith said.

　　Louise was relieved after she was told that Emily was fine.

　　Dr. Smith left the drug and went back.

　　Louise decided to stay tonight to take care of Emily, Chris, and Diane.

　　At night, when Emily's body temperature dropped, Chris and Diane went back to sleep with relief.

　　Louise tucked them in and left the room.

　　Chris and Diane opened their eyes. They were about to take action.

　　Chris got up from bed and took out his laptop while Diane helped him keep an eye on Louise.

　　Chris had a serious expression on his face. Rose dared to hurt Emily, which made him very angry. He wanted to teach Rose a lesson.

　　He kept tapping his fingers on the keyboard, and he broke through one firewall after another.

　　The Hodkinson Group was suddenly attacked by a hacker, and its IT Department staff was urgently called back to work overtime.
