Chapter 17UNUSUAL

SOPHIA CASTILLO

The person who called my name is a high school classmate of mine. His name is Maxwell.

"Sophia," he called again, walking closer to our table.

"Max," I called back.

"Wow, it's been a long Sophia," he said to me before turning his attention to Albert and Adrian.

"Hello sir," he said to the both of them.

"Hello to you young man," Albert replied but Adrian said nothing.

His face was rigid as he stared at Max.

"I'm good and you?" I asked him, sincerely interested to know because the last time I heard about him, I heard he got in an accident.

"I've been fine. I just came back from London yesterday and will be around for like five days before going back," he tells me.

"London? You go to school there or you relocated, which is it?" I asked him genuinely interested.

"I relocated after my accident. I came for my cousin's birthday," he pointed at a young man seated far across our table.

"I see. Happy birthday to him in advance," I said.

My eyes darted at Adrian.

"Max, meet my husband, Adrian, and my grandfather-in-law," I introduced him to them.

Surprise masked Max's face as soon as I introduced them.

"You are married?" He asked and I nodded my head.

"Yes. I got married two weeks ago," I inform him.

"Wow! I didn't know. Congratulations," he said.

He turned to look at Adrian whose facial expression had not changed one bit.

"Grandfather, this is a friend and classmate from high school Maxwell," I introduced to grandfather, not attempting to introduce him to Adrian as I do not have the courage yet to do so.

"I see. Nice to meet you, young man," Grandfather said to him.

God being faithful to me, Maxwell's attention was needed by his cousin and so he had to leave.

"Nice to meet you, Adrian," Maxwell said before walking away.

Nothing was said amongst any of us till we left the restaurant and went to the movies. Grandfather made sure Adrian and I shared popcorn. I haven't been able to eat any popcorn as I was too scared of Adrian.

He has not made a rude remark or spoken to me since in the restaurant. His facial expression had not changed and I wondered how he can keep up with it for that long.

After the movies, we parted ways with grandfather and went back home.

I came out of the car, excepting Adrian to follow shit but he does not as the car drive away with him inside of it.

I wondered where he could be going but I reminded myself to mind my business and so I went upstairs to sleep.

When I woke up the next day, Adrian wasn't back. It didn't seem like he came back last night.

"It's none of your business if he came back or not Sophia and besides this is for the best," I muttered to myself before going to take my shower and prepare for the day.

I miss my parents and I wish I could go see them but I didn't want to complicate the issues on the ground.

Adrian did not return home for a week. I began to worry even when I didn't want to. I had his phone number on my phone yet I was afraid to call him.

Since I couldn't go see my parents, I spoke to them on the phone and we did facetime together. It was nice seeing them after my wedding.

I was disappointed they didn't call me but they said they wanted to give me space and let me adapt.

"Sophia," I heard Sarah call my name and I flutter my eyes open to look at her.

"What is it?" I asked her.

"Sir Adrian is back," she replied and I quickly sat up.

"Really?" I asked and she nodded her head in confirmation.

It's been a whole week since I last saw him and I wondered where it was he could be. His grandfather called me two days ago asking if he was in the room with me and I had to lie to him because I do not know how to tell him that I haven't seen Adrian for a week now.

It isn't the first time Adrian had left and come back so I tried not to be too bothered.

*******

"Are you okay?" I asked Adrian was shivering whole he slept. Beads of sweat formed on his forehead.

The Adrian I knew would have woken up before I did but it was past ten in the morning and he is not up.

I did not want to disturb him or get close before but now I had no choice when I saw that he was shivering.

"Adrian?" I called.

I made an attempt to touch him but he held my hand from doing so and I swallowed the lump that formed in my throat.

"Do not," he said with his eyes closed.

"But you are not feeling fine," I said, almost in a whisper.

"Do not touch me," he said.

For the first time in my life, I decided to go against Adrian. When he touched me, I not only felt that he was sick but his hold on me was hot.

I placed my palm on his forehead to check his temperature and I gasped. "You are running a fever," I said.

I removed my hand from his hold to go and get a thermometer so that I could check his temperature.

I returned later with a thermometer in my hand. I put it in his mouth and after some seconds, I took it from his mouth and gasped when I saw his temperature.

"You need to see a doctor Adrian," I said to him but he shook his head.

"Do not," he said and I frowned at his statement.

"What do you mean by that Adrian? You are running a fever and if you don't get treated who knows what might happen," I challenged.
