A TRAP
A TRAP
Angela's unease turned to alarm. She looked down at the twins sleeping soundly with their heads resting on her lap, then up to Jace, who had his ears sealed with his ear pods and his eyes closed, listening to music, maybe. Something was off about the driver all of a sudden. She could feel it, and also her heart was beating strangely. What if this is a sign that something bad is about to happen? The wrong direction and more scary, they were moving on a lonely road with just the cab and the van behind them in sight! She had no idea where this particular direction was headed, and the driver said he knew what he was doing. Angela closed her eyes and drew a deep, sound breath. Perhaps she's just being anxious for nothing. Not like Antonio could possibly set a trap for her using the cab driver she had booked for their trip. As the driver suddenly sped up, Angela's instincts kicked in again; this time she leaned forward, her eyes locked on the driver. "Take us back to the main road, please." "I told you to relax, there's nothing to be scared of," the driver replied, a hint of frustration in his voice. "I don't remember mentioning to you that I am scared, more like concerned," Angela snapped, trying to play smart on him. "It's written all over you…I am not a kidnapper or any of that, just a cab driver. Like I said, this direction is still leading to your destination." Jace opened his eyes, the lonely road made him curious, his eyes shifted to the side and found the driver explaining inaudible words. That made him concerned and curious, so he pulled off his ear pods. "I don't feel safe. If you don't return to the main road, you leave me no choice but to raise an alarm!" Angela snapped out with a frown. "What's going on, Angela?" Jace asked her, his voice calm but alert. "The driver's taking us in the wrong direction, we are supposed to be heading west. I asked him to take us back, and he is giving meaningless excuses," Angela explained, her angry eyes still fixed on the driver. "It's not meaningless, it's the traffic," the driver replied. Jace's gaze shifted to the driver, his eyes narrowing. "What's going on, man? You heard her. Why are we heading west instead of east?" The driver's smile faltered, and he hesitated before speaking. "Uh, like I said earlier, it's a shortcut. You want to avoid traffic, right?" Jace's eyes narrowed in suspicion. "Avoid traffic? By going in the opposite direction? No, man, that doesn't add up." The driver's eyes darted between Jace and Angela, seeing that they were both getting tense and suspicious about his decision. He had to try harder to convince them, or he will pay for this mess with his life. "Look, I know what I'm doing. Just relax, okay?" he said tightly. But Angela was not convinced. She exchanged a worried glance with Jace. Also, her instincts kept screaming that something was very wrong. The driver's energy wasn't the same as before when she apologized for keeping him waiting back at the penthouse. Lonely strange road? Traffic? A shortcut? She may be exaggerating, but for the sake of the girls and Jace, she will take no shame in overthinking just to keep them safe. "I am sorry, but I can't relax this way. Take us back to the main road, we can deal with the traffic, we are not in a rush anyway." She demanded, her voice firm. "Are you sure it's okay for the kids too? I thought they wanted to get to their destination as soon as possible?" The driver asked, and his eyes flicked from the road to the twins resting their sleepy heads on her lap. The driver hesitated, then nodded reluctantly. "Hey! They are children, and they are fast asleep, I don't see why you should worry about that," Jace cut in. "Okay, okay. But like I said, it's going to take longer, just remember you made this choice," he replied and made to turn the cab around, just then a car rammed against their cab. The twins were jerked up from their sleep, and Angela screamed in panic. Her instincts made her shield the twins immediately at the hit. The car was rammed again and the glass shattered. "What is happening!" Angela snapped out, unable to raise her body from protecting the twins. Hearing her panicking voice made the twins burst into tears. "Who the fuck was that!" Jace snapped. In a twinkle of an eye, the cab driver was silent in all the chaos, he simply stepped on the brake and their cab stopped. At the same time, another car rammed against them, making them two cars, side by side, trapping it between them. "Angela!" The kids kept yelling as the car rammed and rammed against their cab. Angela opened her eyes amidst the chaos and found the driver pulling out his seat belt, then he opened his door and jumped out, he ran to the van driver and the van driver drove off. "Hey! That's ours!" She yelled but only in her head. She couldn't even utter a word, still overwhelmed by all that was happening. Her heart was pounding so hard. Was I right all along? The cab driver wasn't a genuine cab driver. The ramming continued. "Angela, are we going to die!" The twins' cries cut into her thoughts. Angela had her face soaked with sweat, serving as a shield for the twins with her body; she had some cuts from the shattered glasses. Finally, the ramming stopped. Slowly she lifted her face, the first thing that came to her mind was the twins. Her eyes were wet and big with fear. "Lia…Liya are you girls okay?" She sobbed in a whisper. The twins were too scared to answer. They were literally shaking so hard in panic. "An… Angela." That was Jace's groan. The tone in his voice made her extremely worried. "Jace! Are you okay? Please tell me you are okay." She sobbed loudly. Jace couldn't reply just then, armed men busted out of the two cars, weapons drawn, and surrounded the cab. Angela's heart raced as she gazed out the broken window in horror. "Why is this happening." Angela cried silently.
