Angelina’s POV
I looked between Alex and Lucas in bafflement. They were really offering me a chance to kill the man they’ve been hunting down for months trying to kill him and avenge their father’s death. It left me with so much more respect for them.
I looked down at the knife I was clutching tightly and a little shakily inside the palm of my hand, then looked back up at Lucas.
He was giving me that determined, supportive, and encouraging look to do as I wish in any way to take down my haunting nightmare, the demon that keeps appearing in my dreams, turning my sleep into an endless cycle of agony and pain.
But like I thought before, I wasn’t a murderer, pretty far from it considering how almost every cell in my body was screaming at me to shove that knife deep into his heart and watch the light go off in those deep blue eyes that are painfully a replica of mine, while my heart was rooting me in place and preventing me from moving a muscle.
I handed the knife back to Lucas and said in a choked tone “Take it and end him for all of us”
He held the knife as his face softened and he said to me in a low voice “I will”
The distant sound of gun shots finally ended and I prayed to god that no one managed to get away from them.
Lucas approached Zade with Alex right on his heels.
“You will regret this, mark my words” Zade said darkly to them but stood his ground, unflinching.
“I don’t think so” said Lucas smugly.
He stabbed him deeply in the lower side of his upper body, right where one of his kidneys is supposed to be while Zade grunted through gritted teeth.
“This is for Alex” Lucas said venomously.
He pulled the knife and plunged it into his other side as he continued speaking “This is for Jenny”
He pulled it out and stabbed him right where he deserved the most; for my own reasons, right in the groin. That’s when Zade lost control over his pain, as a loud, piercing, long scream came out of him.
It was as satisfactory as much as it was disturbing, seeing someone get stabbed in that place. Lucas had quite the dark wits to put that knife there. And it kind of made me admire him a little bit.
My admiration for him increased when I heard his next words over Zade’s wails of pain “And that’s for Angel’s mom you dickhead”
He pulled the knife right as Zade went down on his knees, still screaming heartily, and handed the bloody knife over to Alex “I’m all done”
Alex took the knife and didn’t waste a second before shoving it to the hilt into the center of his spinal cord causing a chocked gasp to cut off his screams.
“That’s for the tremendous amount of pain you caused our mother to feel” Said Alex viciously.
He kicked him hard, making him fall down inside the deep hole.
He picked up the small tank of gasoline and started pouring it all over him until he was drenched in it.
Without asking, Lucas pulled out his lighter and threw it over to Alex on the other side of the hole.
“This is for our father, you son of a bitch. May you literally burn in hell forever and ever” said Alex menacingly before throwing the lighter down on him, setting his whole body on fire.
Zade let out extremely loud, animalistic screams for thirty seconds before surrendering to his death.
I watched the whole thing without shedding a tear despite the gruesome pain I witnessed in his eyes. Even though I cried hysterically for the man who pulled the trigger and killed my mom up on that mountain, about five days ago. I felt bad, I even hated Lucas for doing that to him then. But for Zade, I didn’t feel a damn thing. Maybe I didn’t revel in it like Lucas and Alex did, but no part of me felt bad for seeing him get tortured like that.
“God that felt so fucking good” muttered Lucas under his breath by my side. He was still watching the fire eat away at Zade’s dead, burning corpse.
And it did. It felt like a huge rock got removed from my chest. Fearing and loathing the man for the past three years since I’ve heard mom’s story, I couldn’t be more relieved that he was no longer breathing, no longer hurting anyone else the way he had hurt many before us.
With that burden removed, I turned around and headed towards where the cars were parked by the entrance of the cemetery, while taking huge gulps of air, trying to convince myself that I was safe from him now.
It worked to some degree, but my mind kept planting doubts in my head. What if he meant what he said? That someone else will come for me, or take revenge on the Snows? He seemed awfully sure of himself, even after Lucas told him that his whole gang of followers were murdered.
Was it just an act so he doesn’t appear like he lost the game, to rattle them just to screw with their heads? Or was he serious and there really was someone out there about to carry the torch after him that the Snows weren’t aware of?
Lucas’s voice pulled me out of my deep thoughts as he said lightly next to where I was standing between the two cars “I guess it’s time to leave this place now, right?”
I turned towards him and saw him leaning against the side of his car casually as he gave me an admiring look that didn’t pass unnoticed by me.
“Yeah, it is. Your mom said that she will ask someone to drive me to Fairbanks. Should I wait here or what?” I said back casually too.
“She probably meant Mathew. Get in I’ll take you over to him. He must still be at the border cleaning up the mess over there. Unless you want to stay here at the cemetery all by yourself” he said lightly as he opened the passenger door for me.
I narrowed my eyes at him. He had a serious case of personality disorder. One second he’s regretful, asking for forgiveness, for a second chance, and the next he’s delighted to get me out of here as fast as possible without so much as a flicker of sadness at letting me go.
I looked back at Alex who was headed towards his own car and noticed the weird exchange of glances he and his brother had before his eyes darted over to me.
“Goodbye Alex. I hope you and the rest of your family never have to go through something like that ever again” I said sincerely.
“Watch out for yourself out there, Angelina. And like I told you earlier, if you find yourself in any sort of trouble, don’t hesitate to call me, ok? I’m serious. We live for the action not the dull, small town, boring life. You’d be doing me a favor instead of the other way around” he said softly to me.
“Ok, I’ll give you a call if I need help though no offence, I hope I don’t ever have to call you for both our sakes” I said half seriously.
He chuckled and got inside his car while I climbed into the passenger seat as Lucas closed my door quietly and went over to his side.
He started the car and proceeded to drive out of the cemetery.
“So you and Alex exchanged numbers, huh? That kind of hurts my ego a little. I mean shouldn’t I be the one you call in times of distress instead of Alex? I did save your life once before if you haven’t forgotten” he said thoughtfully.
I gave him a sideway glance and said sarcastically “First of all, your brother gave me his number while we were waiting for you to arrive, I didn’t ask him for it. Second, you don’t seem all that interested to rescue me a second time judging by your delighted mood at the thought of me leaving, so why is your ego hurt exactly?”
“It’s hurt Angel, because you’re leaving. It’s not the only thing hurting to be honest, but I don’t plan on letting it consume me, I have a much better, effective plan than that” he said gently.
“What plan?” I asked in a strained tone, feeling like I wasn’t going to like what’s coming out of his mouth next, not one bit.
“I’m taking the liberty to drive you to Fairbanks myself. Who knows, maybe along the way, you’ll change your mind and decide to come back to Snow and join our family for real this time. Buckle up, we have a two hour drive ahead of us” he said determinedly while looking me straight in the eyes.
