Angelina’s POV

“You broke my trust, Lucas! And you know exactly how hard it was for me to let you in, in the first place. You know everything about me, and about my past. I bared my fucking heart to you! And what did you do? You remained silent. You saw and heard how much I was drowning in guilt for causing their deaths! I was blaming myself immensely and you saw all that suffering and kept quiet about it. Is that how much you care about me? If that’s true, I don’t want it anymore. Because I clearly do not mean that much to you the way you led me to believe” I said angrily to him.

I wasn’t going to open the door no matter what. No matter who talked to me or who tried to get me to let them in, but against my better judgment, I found myself doing the exact opposite.

I had an open wound, bleeding and hurting, and I couldn’t resist from letting out that unbearable pain on him. He deserved whatever I threw at him because he fucking hurt me the most out of all of them. Even more than Diana.

He thought apologizing would solve anything. Explaining his reasons for hiding the truth from me would make me understand him and forgive him. Well, it did the exact opposite. It made me feel a hundred times worse than I already did. It provoked me too much, I had no choice but to open the door I swore I wouldn’t open till morning, and give him a decent piece of my mind.

“Admit it! You don’t trust me. That’s the only reason you kept quiet when I kept telling you why I was too set on leaving your town! If you truly did trust me, if you never saw my father in me or associated me with him, you would have entrusted me with that secret and knew I would never go and open my mouth or expose them to anyone” I said hurtfully while my tears kept flowing endlessly.

All through my lash out, his face never wavered from that pain filled mask he had on. I could see his regret so clearly but I refused to let it register, recognize it, or acknowledge it.

He shook his head and said emotionally “I trust you, I swear I do. I made a mistake Angelina. I should have known you can keep it a secret, I should have told you myself instead of you finding out like this. Please, forgive me. I can’t stand seeing you in pain anymore, it’s killing me. I will never hide anything from you ever again, I promise”

I shook my head “None of that matters now. I’m leaving…tomorrow” I pointed my forefinger at his chest and said fiercely “And you better hand me my ID then and not stand in my way”

He sighed in frustration as he stared hard at me and I stared right back at him the same way.

“If you don’t want to forgive me, that’s okay. If you don’t want to give me another chance, that’s fine. If you want nothing to do with me anymore, I’ll keep my distance from you, you have my word. Just don’t leave like this. At least wait for the fake ID to arrive” he pleaded with me defeatedly.

“I already told you, you lost all of my trust, Lucas. There’s none of it left enough to believe your words right now. I’m leaving. Don’t bother talking to me through the door again, I’ve heard everything I needed to hear. When it’s time to meet up with Zade, you can knock on my door then” I said firmly, and left him standing there and went right back inside, closing the door behind me.

I sat back against the door and rested my body against it.

That little outburst out there burned most of my pain and anger. I was left numb and hollow. Even my tears dried up and I didn’t even have the power to shed new ones. I was so exhausted and emotionally drained at this point.

Where the hell am I going to go?

Seattle was out of the question. I can’t even go back to get any of my stuff, photos, phone, or clothes. All my memories are completely lost now. They only remain in my head.

I need money to travel but I’m not going to ask them for any, even if they offered. I only need a ride back to Fairbanks, and that’s it.

I’ll just have to lay low in there for a while, wait tables or clean hotel rooms to gather some money and then get the hell out of Alaska and put as much distance from this place as humanly possible while still watching out for Zade’s men.

Yeah, a real piece of cake.

Lucas doesn’t attempt to speak with me again. I don’t even know if he’s still sitting outside my door or not and frankly, I didn’t care.

Eventually, exhaustion took its toll on me and I found myself drifting off to sleep in the same position as my head rested back against the door.

Lucas’s POV

I stayed outside her door the whole night.

I didn’t speak to her again. I knew it was futile at this point. She wasn’t ready to hear anything from me because of her pain. I just have to wait for her to cool off for a bit.

I didn’t bat an eye until Alex called me at 7:30 in the morning saying he was near the border.

I got up from my stiff position by the door just in time to see my mom emerge out of her room.

She approached me with concern in her eyes “You were staying here all night?”

“Yeah, I tried to speak with her but she just went off on me and closed herself back inside again. I was afraid she might do something crazy and leave on her own or do something to herself. I wasn’t even sleepy so I figured might as well try to keep an eye on her, or… you know what I mean” I said firmly.

“Yeah, I heard what she said to you. She is right to feel angry and betrayed. We shouldn’t have hid the truth from her. She’s still insisting on leaving and it’s breaking my heart in half Lucas. But…. We can’t keep her against her will. I don’t want you over reacting and making things worse just to keep her here. You might have to let her…” she said softly before I cut her off strictly “No! she’s not going anywhere. She can hate me all she wants but she’s not leaving this place. She’s going to get herself killed out there, you and I both know that. If I end up being the bad guy in her eyes in order to keep her safe, then so be it”

She pursed her lips and before she could speak again, I said hurriedly “I’m going across the border to bring Alex and Jenny, they’ll be here in fifteen minutes, ok?”

She nodded her head and a little smile claimed her face “Finally they're coming home. Gosh! I missed them both so damn much, hurry back Lucas please”

I kissed her forehead and said softly “You’ll see them soon”

I went into my room, changed my clothes and was out the door in under three minutes.

I drove my SUV to the edge of the border where it was being heavily guarded in preparation for today’s events.

I have to sneak Alex and Jenny across without letting anyone know yet. It was crucial they don’t reveal themselves to anyone until the moment comes.
