Angelina’s POV

Lucas finally released his harsh hold on my arms as he turned around to lock the front door with the key he took from Mathew earlier.

Why he was locking it if we were just going to talk? I had a very, sinking, bad, awful, dreadful feeling about the answer to that question.

He turned back around and addressed me strictly “Move inside”

I pursed my lips and started walking inside the house into the living room that was open with the small dining room on the opposite side.

“Sit down” he ordered behind me when I stopped in the middle of the living room.

I moved and sat at the single couch, by the unlit fire place. I was freezing cold and I wasn’t talking about the actual cold dread of being left alone with Lucas, I was honestly freezing cold, and shaking like a leaf with the whole chattering teeth and shivering heart. Our little altercation outside got me soaking wet as I ended up being the one pinned down right on the snowy, freezing ground.

He moved silently and thankfully, started lighting up the fireplace before doing whatever it is he wanted to do to me.

I honestly had no freaking idea what was on his crazy, retarded mind, so I didn’t even try to guess because it will most probably turn out to be wrong.

After he was done lighting the fire, making sure it was really grand to get the room warm as fast as possible, he brought the opposite armchair closer and sat directly in front of me, with a tamed expression on his face. There was no coldness or anger in him, unlike my expectations.

“Ok, Let’s start this from the beginning, shall we?” he said firmly.

“What do you mean?” I asked in confusion, rubbing my ice cold hands against each other in nervousness and trying to stop my teeth from chattering so I don’t appear so freaking scared, even though I was, and I had no doubt that he knew that too.

“I mean tell me your whole story. From the second you were born until this moment right here” he explained firmly.

I was taken aback, I couldn’t say anything in response.

He seriously wants to…. Talk?

I narrowed my eyes at him, thinking what his end game was here.

“What’s the point? You won’t believe a word of it. I’m not going to fall into your mind games one more time Lucas. I’m seriously tired of it all. Just do whatever you want with me and get it over with” I said in agitation.

He gave me a hard look and I could see him trying so hard to control himself from snapping at me as he said a little impatiently “There is no mind game right now. Just tell me the whole fucking truth and let me be the one to decide whether I will believe you or not”

I scowled at him, not exactly reassured by that at all, nor encouraged to bare out my heart to him either. And he kind of sensed that as he said more calmly “Just talk to me Angel, please”

“Ok, Let’s get one thing straight right here, right now. If you want me to say anything else, you need to stop using that nickname on me!” I snapped at him in anger.

The tip of his lips lifted up as he tried to hide his smile and said softly “Can’t do that, it suits you so well. Plus, Angelina is just too damn long”

I froze when he said that it suits me so genuinely like that. Don’t be fazed Angelina! Don’t you trust anything he says not even when he uses that tone!

I try to ignore the first sentence he said and fight like hell not to show him that he got my stupid heart reacting to those words as I said seriously “It’s Angelina for you, Lucas. That’s if you want to hear my story”

He sighed a heavy sigh and said in surrender “Fine…. Angelina. Tell me everything”

I took a deep breath and started talking firmly “My mom….” The first word gets out of my mouth and makes my heart constrict in place, making me pause before I force myself to carry on.

I notice that his eyes fill with sympathy when he catches my struggle but he doesn’t say anything and gives me time to gather myself.

“She was working as a maid at… Zade’s house when she was just eighteen. Her father was a hitman working for him and he asked Zade to hire her at his mansion. One unfortunate night, Zade noticed her when she was serving him dinner and……”

I couldn’t bring myself to say it in front of him. I know it made me look more suspicious because even those few sentences I spoke already, I was tripping up as I said them nervously.

This was so hard to say out loud. And right now, I could feel how fucking hard it was for my mother to have that talk with me when I was fifteen. She was much more braver when she told me her story though, unlike her daughter.

I took another deep breath and looked at the fire the whole remaining time I resumed with the story. It was the only way I could speak about this without pausing every five seconds to pick up the shards of my breaking heart. I didn’t care if it made him feel like I was avoiding his gaze because I was lying with another cover up story. It was just the only way I could talk about it.

I told him everything, without skipping any details. I told him about the rape, the escape, the fake father on paper, how normal and simple our life was in Seattle, and how it was all going perfectly… until it wasn’t.

“She was my one and only person in this whole world. I was all she had and she was mine too. My mom never hid the truth from me. She told me everything when I was fifteen. She told me how vile and evil that man is and what he is capable of doing. I grew up hating him so profoundly both for what he did to her and for what he did for a living, and fearing that one day he would track us down, even though it seemed really impossible”

My tears were all over my face throughout the whole story and I didn’t bother to wipe them away as I finally turned to look at him before getting to the important part.

His face was composed, not giving anything away.

“Until it wasn’t impossible no more. That was two days ago. I went inside my house, went into my room and found my mom kneeling in the middle of my room with a gun to the side of her head. One of them was hiding behind the door as he grabbed for me, covered my mouth while the other one pulled the trigger right in front of my eyes. He ordered them to kill her in front of me, otherwise why would they keep her alive until I came home? Next thing I know, I’m inhaling into a napkin and I pass out. I woke up repeatedly on the ferry to Alaska but they just kept drugging me again and again right until we were close to your town. I tried to fight them off, tried to kill the asshole who killed my mom by strangling him but failed. That’s when you intercepted them. They turned around to me and said to keep my mouth shut and not say one word about my name nor my relation to Zade. They told me that if I said anything to seek help from you and you find out who I really am, I will face a fate that’s worse than death itself because you were raising hell trying to get your hands on him or anyone who could bring him down for killing three of your family. And you know what? As I stood there up that mountain road, watching you shoot a bullet after bullet at that man, I believed them. I believed everything they said you would do to me if you find out who I really am. That’s why I lied to you, that’s why I kept lying to you. Because I had no other choice. I wanted to take a page out of my mom’s book, grab myself a brand new ID and disappear off the face of this earth so that not you or Zade can ever find me again. But it was all a distraction. You were never going to let me go. You were just buying time to dig behind me and find out who I am. You want the truth, Lucas? When I walked into that office and you said ‘don’t you recognize your own father?’ I thought you were talking about Zade. I thought you found out everything then. I thought that beat up man was Zade because I don’t even know what he looks like. And when I found out he was actually one of his men sent to rescue me from you I held on to that, not because I wanted to go to Zade but because my other choice was to stay here with you and face God knows what at your hands. And also because I realized how much Zade was hell bent on getting his hands on me and I didn’t want your family to suffer anymore. I didn’t want your mom to lose another son! I had no choice but to go willingly with that man. I couldn’t tell you the damn truth because I already lied a thousand times to you. You would never believe another word that comes out of my mouth ever again. That’s the truth, but I’m not really sure it’s going to matter at this point”

I stayed quiet after I was done talking and awaited my fate.

Not giving a damn about what was about to happen.

That story I just told ripped me to pieces.

There was nothing even left to save anymore.

And that’s why it didn’t really matter what happens after this.

I wasn’t praying so hard for him to believe me.

I was just praying hard for him not to prolong whatever it is he wanted to do to me.
