Lucas’s POV

When my mom asked her if she was in any pain and needed a pain killer, I watched her tears fall, like that question opened up a very deep wound in her heart.

I felt like she was seconds away from sobbing but yet again, for I don’t know how many times since I met her merely an hour ago, she held herself barely and shook her head at my mom.

Mom noticed how her question indirectly affected her more than it should as she looked at her tenderly but didn’t know what else to do or say because she doesn’t even know anything about her.

Sara came and took her to her room while my mom turned to me with a very angry glare.

Shit! I’m in so much trouble and I knew exactly why.

I knew I went overboard when I told everyone who she was and what she was doing in that car. I know how much I fucking hurt her with my words and while I felt extremely bad for doing that, a part of me liked messing with her.

Because I knew she was nothing like what she was claiming to be. And I will make sure mom knows that too. She felt humiliated in front of my mom she couldn’t even look anyone in the eyes anymore, and while I felt like an insensitive pig, I also felt the need to say those words in the hopes of eliciting a reaction that would make her spill her secrets. But she was a fucking force. Stubborn. And admiringly very strong at managing her emotions.

“What?” I asked innocently.

“I have no words to describe or begin to explain how completely horrified I am with your behavior Lucas!” she said angrily.

“You asked me and I answered you. Would you rather I lie instead?” I said casually.

“I’d rather you have a little bit of sensitivity next time and mind your words before you speak them. Do you have any idea how extremely embarrassed she was when you called her that? Even if she is who you claim she is, you have no right to speak about her like that!” she berated me.

“If she’s embarrassed, then she shouldn’t be doing this in the first place, should she?” I said in a hard tone.

My words seem to cause her to think for a while before she spoke “She told you that this is who she is? She admitted to being…I can’t even say it!” she said in frustration.

I sat her down and explained the whole thing to her, from Alex’s phone call yesterday morning to what we talked about in my office before we came here.

I wasn’t going to make her any God damn fake ID, I was just buying time for myself to gather more information about her.

“I have no idea where to begin pointing out your countless mistakes Lucas. What’s going on with you? You weren’t always this person! Instead of helping her out, you’re deceiving her and allowing her to lie to you about her name and who she is? Just tell her the damn truth and let her explain herself!” she said tensely.

“No, we’re doing this my way. I’m the leader remember? What I say goes, end of discussion” I said in a hard tone I never used with my mom before, not once in my entire life.

It caught her by surprise and a look of hurt crossed her features, which instantly hurt me a thousand times more.

I tried saying more softly “Look mom, it is the only way to get to the bottom of this. She will never trust me and it’s not because of the dark side she witnessed from me, it’s because the men she was with somehow convinced her never to trust me. Nothing I say to her will ever make her talk and even if she does, I can’t trust that whatever she says to me will be the real truth, no matter how innocent she looks. I need hard facts to face her with and I need time to gather those facts. So the only way is to go along with her story and treat her as if we believe her. You can tell April, and Sara everything but make sure not to mention the name Angelina to them or they might slip up by mistake and call her with it. Please trust me, and trust that everything I’m doing so far is to bring Alex and Jenny back as fast as possible”

Her eyes watered as she said emotionally “The poor girl looks so broken Lucas! Whatever her story is, we have to help her, she’s very hurt and I don’t mean physically. She’s in trouble I can sense it”

Yeah, you and I both.

“Once we find out everything, I’ll see what I can do for her. I’m very tired, I’m going to rest a bit until lunch is ready” I said hastily as I stood up and headed upstairs for my room.

Just before I could touch the handle to go inside my room, April’s room door opened behind me and I saw her getting out looking shaken and troubled.

I instantly walked over to her and asked her in alarm “What’s wrong? Are you okay?”

I saw tears in her eyes and the blood drained from my face at the thought of my sister being in any sort of pain.

She spoke in a chocked tone “I went into my bathroom and heard the girl crying so heartily in hers. I could hear the shower running, but more than the sound of the shower, her cries were carrying over through the wall and into my bathroom very clearly. I have no idea what’s going on but Shit Lucas, her sobs sounded so painful, they were so shattering”

Her words hit me like a bullet to the heart.

The guest room was right next to April’s, across from mine.

It had it’s own bathroom just like all the rooms in this house.

I straightened up and told her gently “Go downstairs, I’ll check on her, don’t worry, ok? Everything will be fine, I promise”

She nodded her head and started descending down the stairs.

I ran my hands through my hair as I cursed.

Was she crying because of me?

I turned around, faced her door, and turned the knob, hoping it wasn’t locked.

The door opened and I walked in, closing the door behind me and noticing that it didn’t have a key, which served me well.

As soon as I entered, I heard the unmistakable sound of heart wrenching sobs from behind the closed door of her bathroom.

Never in my life have I heard sobs so deep, intense, and full of agony like what I just heard coming from Angelina.

This has nothing to do with me, I was certain at that moment as her anguish filled, muffled screams carried over to my ears.

Those sobs, these screams, that pain, there was a familiarity to them.

Those were sobs of loss.

I was familiar with them because not long ago, they were coming out of me, under my own shower.

She lost someone.

Someone that meant the world to her.

For only that kind of person can get those agonizing, killing weeps to come out of us, to destroy us, to bring us down on our knees and let that pain consume every cell inside us.

Her cries were burning so many holes inside my heart.

They brought tears inside my eyes.

They were killing me as much as they were killing her.

I was glued in front of her bathroom door, listening to her suffer in there, listening to her die slowly, listening to her fall apart into a million pieces.

I stood there sharing her grief without her knowing. Being by her side without her even asking. Taking her pain in as if it was my own.

I didn’t busy or distract myself by thinking about who she was crying her heart out for in there, it didn’t matter who he or she was, all that matters was that this girl was hurt by Zade as equally as we were if not more. And I vowed to myself that I will take her revenge as if it was my own and make him pay for every single tear she was shedding in there.
