Alex’s POV
David was shielding Lucas with his body just before a bullet hit him in the back.
Lucas had his gun aimed and shot the injured guy who just tried to shoot him before David jumped in front of him. the guy went down with a bullet to his head.
“David!” Lucas called out frantically as he held on to him and checked his injury.
Unfortunately, we didn’t have time to wear our bullet proof vests because of how urgently we had to catch up with Jenny. We barely had time to grab our guns and extra back ups.
Blood was spilling down his shirt, drenching it.
The bullet was lodged in the right side of his lower back.
“Dammit David!” Lucas shouted in rage.
There was no response from David, he passed out.
Jenny was still clutching me tightly and shaking violently.
I lifted her up again and shouted at the others to help carry David back to the car and press on his wound so he doesn’t bleed out.
Snow was merely twenty five minutes away from here.
I got in the back of one of the SUVs, with Jenny secured in my arms and sitting on my lap as we drove back.
Her face was still buried against my chest.
I tightened my hold around her, trying to give her a deep sense of security that she was in desperate need of. Her shivering was making my own heart shiver in anguish at the sight of her scared and affected so much by what she just had to go through because of me.
“Jenny, look at me baby. You’re safe now, I have you” I whispered affectionately, trying to sooth her with my words as well as my touch.
I ran my hand through her hair and tried to pull back the strands that were obscuring my view of her face.
It was drenched in tears and blood.
Her eyes were closed shut.
I saw a small cut on the side of her mouth and I couldn’t help but lean down and kiss her from it gently. Her grip tightened on my shirt in response.
“I’m so sorry Jenny. I’m sorry I got you hurt like this, please forgive me” I said to her in a low voice.
She didn’t answer me or open her eyes to even look at me.
I held on to her tighter and kept kissing her forehead every now and then, trying to reassure us both that she was safe in my arms and not dead because of me.
After about ten minutes, her shivering lessened to a major degree and she opened her eyes and looked at me tearfully with a little reproach in them “I thought you….le… left me… that you…didn’t care what… ha… happens to m..me” she whispered with difficulty as her voice held a painful tremor.
It hurt deeply that she thought I actually gave up on her so easily.
I shook my head and cupped her face with my hand “How could you think like that baby? Don’t you know how crazy I am about you? How much I love you?” I said in pain.
Her tears fell as she continued in the same tone “You sounded s… so indifferent and so….co..cold. Why would you….sa..say something like.. Th.. This?”
“I had to. I had to buy time for my men to spread around so no one could shoot you before I reach you. And I couldn’t let him know how much I cared about you or he would have hurt you a lot more just to mess with me. I couldn’t let him know that you are my weakness, my whole life, my very heart and soul. How could you ever doubt my love for you Jenny? After everything we’ve been through?” I said emotionally.
Jenny’s alarm went off at that moment and with it my heart as well. Because as soon as her alarm started, her eyes fluttered and then she went limp in my arms.
“No, no, no! Jenny! Answer me dammit! Stay with me!” I yelled at her but she didn’t move a muscle.
I checked her watch and saw a low blood sugar level.
“Dean, Call Mathew’s cell right now and give it to me! Go faster Anthony please!” I instructed the two people who were riding in the front.
Dean handed me the phone and Mathew answered right away “Dean what happened? Talk to me” Mathew was frantic on the phone.
“It’s Alex, we’re coming back. I need you to tell mom to prepare a glucagon injection for Jenny. She fainted in my arms and she’s hypoglycemic. I need her to wait outside for me. We’re coming in ten minutes” I ordered him then hung up the phone without hearing his response and waiting for him to ask me about the others.
I kept trying to wake her up to no avail.
Mom was waiting outside the gate with worry etched on her face.
And so were April, Sara, and Mathew.
As soon as we stopped, Dean climbed down from the passenger seat, folded the seat, and pushed it forward to provide space for my mom to properly give the injection to Jenny.
When I exposed her arm for the needle my mom froze at the sight of her torn shirt and looked up at me in horror.
“I got to her on time, she’s okay” I said with a strained voice.
Did I though? I had no idea what the filthy asshole did after I heard him rip her shirt off, the way she was shrieking was still ringing in my ears until now.
I carried her back to my room after that and rested her on my bed.
Her watch registered the change in her levels and the alarm stopped.
“Can you clean her up Sara? she doesn’t need to see blood on her face when she looks in the mirror, and make sure to change her clothes too please. I need to go check on David and the other injured people” I said firmly to them before I stood up from the bed.
“What happened to David?” April asked in a trembling voice.
“He got shot in the back, I don’t know how serious it is, Lucas took him to the hospital” I told them without going into much details.
“Let us know as soon as you find out” mom said gravely.
I rode to the hospital with Mathew driving.
I used his phone; because mine was left in one of the other SUVs when I ran to rescue Jenny and I lost track of it, to call all the available men who walked out of that warehouse without a scratch and assigned them equally to run patrol on all the border entrances around the clock. I also assigned some to the secret entrance in fear of Stefan giving away that certain advantage to Zade and his men before he died.
I arrived to the hospital to find out that David and five other men were currently in surgery.
I sat in the waiting area next to Lucas and waited with him to see what the doctors will say.
“I can’t believe he actually took a bullet for me” Lucas shook his head in astonishment.
I looked at him sideways “The man was willing to blow his damn brains out for you in that front yard. Are you really that surprised that he sacrificed himself for you?”
“That was different man, he knew I wouldn’t let him kill himself, he knew I was just messing around with him, but to actually take a bullet for me, not knowing whether or not he was going to live through it. Now I can be one hundred percent sure that he can never sell us out like that traitorous piece of crap that claimed to be his father”
“Well, glad he finally made your list of trustees” I said dryly.
He inspected me with narrowed eyes and asked levelly “What’s your problem?”
“Seriously? You really have to ask Lucas?” I asked him cynically.
“If this is about Jenny, dude she’s fine. We got to her on time. What happened was nothing compared to what could’ve happened if we had no idea where they took her. So stop beating yourself up for nothing. You had to say what you said and she’ll understand that, she won’t hold it against you”
“Except she did” I said tensely.
“She thought you were serious?” he asked with raised eyebrows.
“A major part of her did. You should have seen the look on her face when she saw me inside that room. She thought she was imagining me, she didn’t think I would actually show up to save her” I said with a little disappointment.
It took Lucas some time to find something to say but eventually he found it and I wish he didn’t “That means the sex must be terrible if she actually doubted your love for her” he said in a hushed tone.
I couldn’t resist as I smacked him hard on the back of his head.
“Stop being such a jerk” I shook my head at him while he muffled his laughter with his fist, and ran his other hand over the back of his head where I hit him.
Eventually, we got word from the men who went into surgery.
Two of them were in critical condition and might not make it.
The others along with David’s injury were thankfully not very serious.
The bullet grazed his kidney but they were able to stitch it up and stop the bleeding on time. The doctors are hopeful for a full recovery.
Lucas patted my shoulder and said seriously “Ok, time for you to go back to your girl now. She needs you the most after what happened. Just go easy on her, will you? Your love for each other developed awfully fast and she had every right to be a little skeptical and unsure if you’d come for her. And let’s not forget her entire male relatives were a bunch of assholes who never showed her what true love and chivalry are, you were the first and only one. She’s entitled to feel what she felt especially after you pulled a damn Oscar with that speech you mouthed off to that prick. You outdone even Mathew man! No wonder she believed that you abandoned her”
And now I felt guilty for smacking him hard, why couldn’t he have said that from the beginning instead of some lame ass comment?
“You’re staying here?” I asked him a little softly.
“Yes, I’m staying with David until he wakes up, I’ll see if the doctor can discharge him after that. He has the best dedicated, capable nurse at home, mom can take care of him and I’m sure she must be worried sick about him”
“Ok, keep us updated when he wakes up” I said to him before I headed back home to my fiery angel who’s been through a hell of a lot today.
I headed back with the sole intention of proving to her exactly how much she fucking means to me and making sure that she will never, ever, think or doubt for a single second that I wouldn’t always come for her. Even if death itself was waiting for me at the end of it.
