On The Border - Marry Him Or Die

Jenny’s POV

“About what?” I asked tightly.

“About me asking for forgiveness for being such a horrible ass to you since you got here?” he said gently.

Well, Alex did say he felt guilty but I didn’t believe him for a second then.

Now, looking into his eyes which were clearly filled with remorse, I don’t know anymore.

I decided to go along with him to see where this will get me.

“Would you like a cinnamon roll? They’re freshly baked” I asked softly.

It took him a few seconds to respond, obviously stunned that I didn’t yell at him to get away from me.

“Sure, I would never pass on a cinnamon roll” he said lightly as he came by and sat on a stool in front of the center counter.

I put two pieces on the plate and placed it in front of him.

He took a bite and groaned “These are so delicious, I don’t think two is going to be enough”

I smiled and said “Well, I made an entire trey for you, while the other one is for the rest of us who don’t want to go into a sugar coma”

He stared at me in wonder probably because I was talking to him so normally and just threw a diabetic joke at him with a straight face.

He recovered quickly and said seriously “Well, we wouldn’t want that to happen again. One scare was more than enough”

I raised my eyebrow at him.

“Isn’t that what you wanted in the first place, Lucas?” I asked firmly.

Yeah, who said forgiveness will come that easily.

My god is that a blush I just saw creeping on his cheeks!

His eyes couldn’t look at me anymore as a pained look crossed his features.

“Look, Jennifer I admit I have been extremely harsh on you and I just want you to know that that person was not the real me. That person was still grieving for the loss of his old man and angry that he didn’t get to save his life and protect him. When Alex brought you here so soon after what went down, I couldn’t accept you as one of us especially considering who your father was. But when I saw what that asshole Jack did to you to get you to come here, I realized I was tormenting the wrong person. I realized what a complete asshole I’ve been to you and I’m so sorry that it took something like that to change my perspective on things. Maybe you cannot forgive me, but I just want you to know that from now on, you have yourself a brother that will do anything for you, even if you don’t want to” he said intensely.

I didn’t want to be a complete fool and believe his words so fast, but a huge part of me believed in his sincerity.

He was looking at me with so much hope shining in his brown eyes and I couldn’t bring myself to be mean and refuse his peace offering.

“I may not be able to forgive you right away Lucas, but I will accept your apology. I’m still gonna stay wary of you though, until you prove yourself as my brother, just thought you should know”

“Thank you for accepting it. And I will do anything to prove that to you” he said with a wide smile as he took another bite.

An idea comes to mind and I put it in motion right away.

“Anything you say?” I said with a challenge.

He swallowed his bite and said so confidently “Aha, just say the word”

Oh, I’m gonna say it.

“Well, I have been working here for over an hour and a half to create these two amazing masterpieces and I did just award you with a whole trey, so how about you actually earn it by doing some honest work?”

“Earn it how?” he looked confused.

I pointed at the huge pile of dirty kitchenware that were stacked on both sinks and said lightly “With cleaning”

He looked at me with shock as if he didn’t register what I just said.

“You want me to clean all of this” he pointed at the sinks in disbelief.

I taunted and said “Oooh is it beneath you to clean a couple of dishes?”

“That’s not a couple! That’s like… a mountain bigger than Snow itself!”

I chuckled at the over comparison and said “Well, you did say anything…”

He looked at me with narrowed eyes and just realized that I kind of baited him using his own words.

Then, his expression changed into one of victory.

“Fine, I’ll just stuff them in the dishwasher, problem solved, payment made” he said triumphantly.

My mouth gaped open “You have a dishwasher! Then why does Sara clean the dishes herself all the time?”

“She doesn’t believe in that thing. She thinks it doesn’t clean well” he said as he continued to snack on his dessert.

“Well, you got off easy… this time” I said lightly before I headed out of the kitchen.

“Better luck next time” he said behind me with a teasing chuckle.

I rolled my eyes and hoped he meant every word he just said to me.

Because if he did, we might end up actually coexisting peacefully in this place and I wanted nothing more than that.

Alex’s POV

“Here we go” I whispered anxiously as I stared back at the laptop.

I was sitting alone in the office of one of our oldest warehouses that we don’t use anymore unless there was an emergency.

While I was drowning with worry since last night on how to figure out who smuggled that man across our borders, I totally forgot about the hidden security cameras I installed six months ago at all the entrances of the town.

No one knows about them except for me and dad, not even Lucas knows.

My dad, after figuring out that Lord Z was going to become a bigger headache than we thought, confided in me and told me about his worries that he might pull something on us through one of the entrances without us finding out about it.

Even though there are men guarding those entrances 24/7, he was still worried about one of them betraying us to him.

I used to believed he was just being precautious, now I’m not so sure. He might have suspected that someone was already working against us but didn’t want to tell anyone until he was sure about it.

So I came up with a perfect idea that he approved of right away.

Hidden security cameras that work on batteries.

Since those entrances are practically located in the middle of nowhere, among high mountains, where no electrical current is possible, I had to install battery based wireless cameras and hide them in between random rocks, so that no one suspects their existence.

There are 5 entrances to the town. 4 entrances through the mountain roads all based on the border between us and Canada, and the fifth entrance was the official road in and out of Snow. Three of those border entrances were known by everyone in town and guarded at all times, but the other one was only known to us; the three brothers and our father, now uncle Stefan knows about it too since he smuggled Jacob through it when they fled the town.

There are five hidden security cameras on all entrances, and my father used to come here everyday and skim through all the feeds that were being saved on a cloud server.

I haven’t come here at all before. He said he’d let me know if he found something worth worrying about but he never did, or at least that’s what I thought.

My job was just to maintain the working of those cameras, replace their batteries on a regular basis, and do that with complete secrecy and without anyone noticing them.

My heart was pounding inside my chest as I began watching the feed from the first camera, setting the date back to one day before my father was murdered.

This was going to take all day, especially if I didn’t find my nemesis from the first couple of cameras.

I didn’t mind though, as long as I get the needed information, I’m willing to sit for days if that’s what it takes.
