Chapter 104

ADRIA’S POV

My lips ran dry as I read it, and I brushed past Stacy to the phone store, but Derek was no longer there.

What did he mean my friends were next?

“Adria. Are you okay?” Stacy asked, coming after me, and I nodded slowly.

“Just promise me you’re not meeting any strangers, or going out at night.” I said, without looking at her. Instead, I was wondering if I could still see Derek.

He could not just decide to mess with my friends. They were precious to me. They were what helped me hold on. I couldn’t begin to imagine how life would feel without them, and that single text had me scared to death.

“Adria, are you sure you’re okay?” Stacy asked again, and I finally turned to her.

“I’m just… I’m just… I think all the news of death might be getting to me. Don’t worry about me. I’ll get over it.” I assured her, trying to give her a reassuring smile.

No matter what, I wanted everyone I loved to be safe because if I lost any of them, I would be heartbroken beyond repair.

I took a step closer to her, and hugged her.

“Adria.” She called softly, and I began to cry. Why was I crying? My fear was like the waves of the sea. Strong, and overwhelming. It was like a living thing inside of me. A beast.

The thing I feared the most was losing the people who mattered to me, and it brought tears to my eyes.

“Adria. Are… Alright, I wouldn’t meet with a stranger. I… I won’t go out at night. Please stop crying. I’m… I’m also sad and scared about all that’s going on. If you cry like this, it’ll break me.” She confessed, and I hugged her even more tightly, as if she was going to disappear all of a sudden.

Later that night, I went to see Lucien. I needed reassurance that if I sat back, and trusted him, everything would be okay.

He opened the door almost immediately, and his gaze softened as he laid his eyes on me.

“Come in.” He said, and I stepped in. “Have you been crying?” He asked, leading me to sit on the sofa.

“I just… I didn’t know what to do, so I just… I began to cry.” I said to him honestly, and sat with a sigh.

“Do you want chamomile tea? It helps in relaxation. I think you need to calm down right now.” He offered, but I waved it off with my hand.

“Derek says my friends are next if I do not think fast. I don’t know what’s on his mind. I don’t know if he intends to strike tonight or tomorrow night, and there’s no way I can stay with them all.” I poured it all out to him, slowly.

“Trust me.”

“I will.” I said immediately, and lifted my eyes to his. “I will trust you. So, instead, do not break my trust. My friends should come out of this unscathed. I need you to assure me that they would be fine.” I said, looking at him desperately, and he nodded slowly.

“You can trust me. Nothing would happen to your friends.” I assured her.

LUCIEN’S POV.

That night, I laid Adria to bed, after giving her chamomile tea so she could relax.

Then I called Mrs. Williams to assure her Adria was safe, and with me.

After that, I took off Adria’s jacket, and scarf, and put them on.

My presence may be overwhelming, but the vampire was going to be confused by Adria’s scent, and would want to see if she was really the one.

I made sure I secured the house before running towards the forest, and hoping he wouldn’t run off. But even if he did, I was going to chase him until the ends of the earth if it would wipe off Adria’s tears.

Seeing Adria devastated made my heart ache, and I was going to stop it.

Just as I had thought, the vampire was there, waiting.

“Have you made your…” he was saying, but stopped as he saw me.

I was right. Adria’s scent was going to confuse him. Her scent was heavy on her clothes.

“Finally, we meet.”

“What do you have to say to me?” He asked, in a cold voice.

“What more do you think I have to say? I’m here to tell you to stop.” I said, walking towards him slowly. “Consider this my first and last warning. One more missing person, and you’ll really have it coming for you. I’m saying that I’ll hunt you down. And you know deep within you that there’s nowhere you can hide when I want to take you. One more killing, and you’re done for.” I said to him, and turned around, walking away.

I heard him curse lightly, and kick rocks on the ground. He was agitated, and concerned. That was good.

When I got back to my house, Adria was still sleeping. There were still tear stains on her face. She must have cried in her sleep.

Well, I was going to make sure she didn’t have to cry anymore.

I cooked a few things before going to bed because I wanted to present Adria with an early breakfast, but I only ended up burning a lot of things because my mind was somewhere else.

The next morning, I woke up to the smell of something delicious cooking, and when I went down the stairs, I saw roast turkey, steamed vegetables, and rice, arranged on the table.

Adria was busy finishing up tomato stew.

“Good morning.” She greeted with a wan smile, and I smiled.

She came over, and served the tomato stew, making the table complete, and she sat.

Just then, my phone rang, and I picked it up.

It was from the commissioner.

“Good morning.”

“Good morning, Lucien. Look, I won’t waste your time. I just heard someone else went missing. It’s all over the news. Another woman reported her daughter missing, and the reporters happened to be at the station. Tell me, is this the work of the vampires?” He asked, and my eyes went to Adria.

Despite my warning, Derek hadn’t stopped.

And it meant I had no choice, but to hunt him down.
