Chapter 97
Chapter 97
ADRIA’S POV.
How could she suddenly tell us to stop talking? Why would she need a break? Since when did friendships need breaks?
I had changed? Was that why she wanted us to stop talking? I thought we had talked about it on the night she saw blood on my jacket.
She had said we’d go through it together, yet she was leaving me?
I was finally ready to be the caring, and loving Adria I had once been before Derek came into the picture, and she was pushing me away?
I walked to her briskly, catching her hand, then pulled her into an empty class.
“You said we’ll go through it together.” I confronted her, as she managed to snatch her hands away from mine immediately we went through the doors of the empty class.
“Yeah, I know I said that, but this is too much. It is too much, Adria!”
“What is too much? You haven’t really waited to see the change since that night…”
“Oh, I’ve seen it, and you know what I think? I think people really don’t know what they’ve got until they’re gone. Maybe when I’m gone, you’ll be able to decide if our friendship still means something to you or not.” She shot back, and turned to leave.
“Stacy!” I called, taking quick steps, and drawing her back.
“If you knew you cherished me, then why didn’t show up yesterday!?” She shrieked.
“Yesterday?” I asked, with my brain turning three hundred, and sixty degrees, trying to recall why I was to show up the previous day.
“The… the boys said it was just stress, and that you turned your phone off because you didn’t want…”
“You’re really something else.” She said with spite, as her eyes shone with tears again, and she turned to leave, but once more, I grabbed her arm.
“Leave me!” She shrieked.
“Alright. Tell me what I did! Let’s stop tiptoeing around it. Tell me, so I can apologize, and be better.” I blurted out, holding on to her arm, and her tears fell.
“We agreed to go to the cinema, didn’t we?” She asked softly, and I lost my grip on her arm. Her arm fell, and I stared at her, feeling truly sorry.
How on earth had that skipped my mind? How could I forget?
We had agreed the day before yesterday, to go to the cinema yesterday, but yesterday, I had gone home, slept, and forgotten all about it.
“I’m sorry.” I muttered.
“Do you even mean it?”
“Let’s go somewhere today. I’ll pay for all expenses. Let’s just catch some fun, and have good memories.” I pleaded earnestly.
“You know how much I really try to keep this friendship working. The four of us, I just feel we’re growing apart. We don’t hang out together anymore. The group chat made for us four seems like it was made for just me and the guys. You rarely talk to us. Yesterday was just the last straw. I really wanted us to see that movie, but I ended up seeing what the guys wanted because you weren’t there.”
“Today, we’ll watch our movie. If it’s Barbie, or a freaking Romeo and Juliet, we will watch it! Right after school. Let’s go together.” I said, holding her shoulders, and a slow smile broke across her face, and she hugged me.
“I don’t want the four of us to grow apart. I want us to always be together. For life.”
“We will be.” I assured her. I just needed my life to be stable. I needed to take care of all the absurdities going on in my life.
~
That afternoon, after classes, I, Stacy, and the guys left the school.
“What are you doing on your phone? This afternoon should be about us.” Tommy said, trying to snatch my phone from me.
“I’m trying to reserve something for us. We’re going to do something really fun.” I said to them in excitement, and Stacy was the most excited until the moment we were standing at a very high point in the sky.
“Why did you do this?” She shrieked, as we were being geared up.
We were going to do a tandem bungee jump. Stacy and I were paired up, while Tommy, and Daniel were paired up.
“I don’t think I can do this!” She shrieked, looking down.
“Don’t! Don’t look. If you look, you won’t be able to do it! Just jump! We’ll feel liberated.”
“Bungee jumping is damn scary. Adria, I don’t think I can…”
“I’m going to jump! I’m going to!” I shouted in excitement, moving us towards the edge, and Stacy went crazy, screaming, and yelling incoherent words.
“We’re jumping into a better friendship!” I shouted, and threw us over the edge.
Stacy’s scream almost split my eardrum, and even I who had been so enthusiastic about jumping, screamed my lungs out.
It felt like my intestines were flying, and that they were going to come pouring out of my mouth. My arms and legs flailed helplessly, wishing to touch the ground, but not wanting to touch the ground at that moment because that meant death, obviously.
After what seemed like years of agony, we were finally hanging down.
I began to laugh while Stacy cried, hitting me.
“Oh my God.” She exclaimed, then began to laugh, and cry at the same time.
We were lifted upwards, and when we touched a flat surface once more, Stacy laid on the ground.
“That was… Gosh, that was…” she was saying, then suddenly moved to me, and threw her arms around me.
We went back down, and the guys were taken up so they could jump.
And for the first time in my life, I saw Daniel scared.
Stacy, and I began to laugh at them, as the look on their faces turned sour as they were being geared up.
“Look at them! They look worse than we looked.” Stacy mocked, laughing.
“Just jump!” I shouted.
“Just jump!” Stacy added, placing her hands over her mouth like a megaphone.
“Shut up.” They both replied at once, and we all burst into giggles.
And that moment… that exact moment seemed to make it all worth it.
Not being with Derek, but being with Lucien, and my friends. It was that moment that reminded me I had a great life, and great people, and didn’t need bad influence.
