Chapter 146
Chapter 146
The days passed unhurriedly as the rehearsals for the play Romeo and Juliet neared their end.
On this day, Charlotte walked out of the school gate after rehearsal and saw Kingsley's car waiting. Kingsley saw her and sweetly opened the car door for her.
Sitting in the car, looking at Kingsley's calm and handsome face, Charlotte narrowed her bright eyes and spoke, "Kingsley, is there something you haven't told me?"
Seeing her unusually serious expression, Kingsley was slightly stunned before a trace of panic swept through his deep eyes.
Could it be that she already knew what he had done to Ben's family?
His fingers resting on his knees curled up a bit, and the knot in his throat rolled as he replied, "You mean, what is it?"
"I'm asking you to confess yourself," Charlotte said. "Come on, say it. No hiding it from me."
Kingsley's face turned vaguely pale, but fortunately, the glass in the back seat had a peep-proof compartment, and the light inside wasn't too bright. Charlotte didn't notice these changes.
He did not reply immediately, remaining somewhat silent. The car became quiet for a moment, and the atmosphere grew stiff.
"Why won't you say anything? And with such a serious expression?" Charlotte asked, looking at him strangely. "You're afraid I'll be angry if I find out, huh?"
Kingsley nodded and held her hand, his voice a little muffled: "Would you be angry?"
If she knew that behind his cool demeanor, he hid such a vicious side; if she knew he was cold-blooded at heart, treating human life like grass; if she knew he was as selfish, ruthless, dark, and scary as ever... What would be her choice?
"Angry? Of course, I'd be angry!" Charlotte said with a stern little face.
Kingsley's nerves suddenly tensed, only to hear her next words.
"If you're always like this, purposely keeping things from me because you're afraid I'll be upset if I find out, then I'll be very, very angry!" Charlotte said. "You don't trust me, and you don't trust our relationship. The most important thing between lovers is openness and communication. We still have a long way to go in the future. How can it work if there are always misunderstandings due to deception?"
Kingsley looked up at her, his eyes slightly stunned.
"And you shouldn't always worry that I'll choose my family over your good intentions in doing this." Charlotte slumped her little face and continued, "As much as I love my family, I also love and adore you, and that affection is not in any way less than what I feel for them. So, in the future, if you ever get involved with my brother and the others again, just tell me. Like this time, for example, dragging Aaron into the fold is something you don't need to hide from me at all, because... if I had known the plan beforehand, I probably would have been even more aggressive than you."
Saying that, Charlotte blinked, her eyes filled with a smile, like a little fox with deep wisdom. Kingsley looked at her smiling face, and his lips unconsciously curved into a smile. But then, his heart sank.
She wasn't talking about Ben's matter; she had no idea about that yet.
Kingsley's emotions surged like a rollercoaster. He was moved by Charlotte's words; he knew how much her family meant to her. And now, his Charlotte was telling him that he was the emotional equivalent of family in her mind. This sent a shiver through his heart, and ecstasy raced through his limbs. But along with the ecstasy came a strong sense of unease.
The better his Charlotte became, the purer and nobler she became, the more he felt humbled by the darkness and filth in his own heart. He was constantly terrified that if she saw his true colors, knew his cruelty, and witnessed him in the act of aggression, the trust and light in her eyes would vanish.
Kingsley let out a breath and pushed down the emotions in his chest.
No, he couldn't let her find out. Ben would be the fuse that could easily expose his heart and blow him to pieces.
Kingsley mused darkly.
Back at home, Charlotte lay in bed, thinking back to Kingsley's nervousness in the car and then Diana's words.
Charlotte's mind flashed back to her daily life with Kingsley—the gentle, gentlemanly, cold, domineering, tough versions of Kingsley eventually merged into the little Kingsley who had protected her with a firm face when she was a child.
The worry in Charlotte's eyes was gradually replaced by determination. She picked up the phone and called Diana again.
"Diana, I've made up my mind. I still want to confront this with him, and I'm ready to trust Kingsley," Charlotte declared.
Diana sighed, her tone cool yet tinged with seriousness and solemnity. "Charlotte, while I doubt you two can sustain this living arrangement for long, I respect that it's your life, and I won't meddle, even as your sister. I'll always have your back and support you when you need it."
Charlotte fell silent for a moment, realizing how much she relied on Diana's support.
"Diana, could you help me find a better therapist for Kingsley, please?" Charlotte asked. "I want to meet with the doctor personally so we can work together to help him. I'd prefer to keep this confidential, so I'd appreciate your discretion."
Aware that Kingsley wished to keep her in the dark, Charlotte feigned ignorance to ease his psychological burden, confident they could overcome their challenges together.
Meanwhile, Carl knocked on Kingsley's study door, holding the medication.
"Noticed you haven't taken your meds in over half a month. You sure you don't need 'em?" Carl asked, observing Kingsley's complexion.
Kingsley glanced at him coldly, conveying his clear refusal.
Carl ceased his persuasion, stowing away the medication. "Oh, and Ms. Livingston's wrapping up her work abroad. She might want to meet Charlotte when she's back."
Kingsley's expression darkened. "I don't need her meddling in my affairs," he snapped.
Seeing Kingsley's fury, Carl retreated. "Alright, I'll let her know," he muttered before leaving.
Left alone, Kingsley clenched his fists, his face foreboding as a storm on the horizon.
